Teluk Intan, Perak

On the way home we stopped in Teluk Intan, a small inland town in Perak, located about a two hour drive from KL. Teluk Intan is best known in Malaysia as the home of the "leaning tower of Teluk Intan".

The Leaning Tower

The Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan, originally built in 1885 to serve as a water tower, is 25.5 meters (8 stories tall). The tower, built out of bricks and wood, houses a clock, imported from England, that still keeps time today. The tower is leaning to one side because the weight of the water was too much for the soft ground to support.

It is possible to go inside the tower and climb up two long flights of wooden stairs.

The food court.

One corner of the town square

It was quite busy on a Saturday afternoon because the town was full of visitors from the surrounding rural areas. Twenty years ago people moved around the town in trishaws; today there are only traffic jams.

Inside of the Chinese bakery. I bought some goodies with caramel inside of them that were pretty tasty.

Kids playing "Uno" outside of the food court.
