Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha

Today is another public holiday as Muslims in Malaysia, and around the world, celebrated Aidiladha. According to Wikipedia, Muslims celebrate to "commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead."

Today Abraham's willingness to make such a great sacrifice is celebrated by sacrificing a goat, cow, or other livestock. The meat is divided into three parts to be distributed to others. The family retains one third of the share, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors, and the other third is given to the poor & needy. Similar to the American holiday of Thanksgiving (which will not be a public holiday in Malaysia), Malaysians celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha by giving thanks and spending time with their familhy and friends.

Selemat Hari Raya Aidiladha to all of my Muslim friends.
