Trip to Nanga Sumpa Longhouse

We were picked up from the Menang Tais longhouse by two residents of the Nanga Sumpa longhouse to took us on our boat journey up the river to their longhouse.


Along the way we passed a number of small house including this "floating house" that was able to rise and fall with the water level (maybe not a bad strategy in a rainforest).


I took about a million pictures of the rainforest along side of the reservoir/river which is not too surprising considering I live in Lubbock where we lack both rivers and trees.

The local clinic. There used to be a helipad across the river from Nanga Sumpa longhouse to allow medical personell to visit. Now longhouse residents are able to travel to the clinic by boat.


The boarding school. Children from the surrounding longhouses attend school during the week but are able to return home during the weekends. Because we were at Nanga Sumpa on Good Friday the children were home from school.


The longhouse residents chop down trees and put then in the river. They flow down the rive and are trapped in these "log jams" where they are able to pull them out of the river and harvest them for lumber and firewood. The boatman was good at avoiding the floating logs along the way.


Finally, we moved from the reservoir into the river itself.


We stayed at the Borneo Adventure Lodge that was located across the river from the Nanga Sumpa longhouse.
