Pitcher Plants and Wild Orchids

Farther down the road we stopped an an abandomed field by the side of the road. The field appeared to have poor soil so the plant growth was not the luxurious tropical rainforests we were used to.

At first I wasn't too sure while we stopped, but soon we saw....

..pitcher plants.

Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants that trap and digest insects to increase their uptake of nutrients.

You can learn more about these cool plants at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitcher_plant

These little guys were growing near the ground and were only a few inches long.

We also saw some pretty wild orchids.
