Pepper Farm

We stopped at a pepper farm owned by a Chinese family. As an American, I have grown up used to having a salt and pepper shaker on the table for every meal. However, I have never really give much thought to where pepper comes from. It was unusual to have pepper on the table in Malaysia and if there was pepper it was usually white pepper not black pepper.

There were other things growing besides pepper. This is cocoa.

I think that this is ginger.

Green oranges?!?

Pepper plants grow as a vine. Initially, they used sticks to give the peppers something to grow on. Eventually they learned that it was cheaper to use straight-growing plants as support.

Pepper on the vine.

After the pepper is dried the sort it into different sizes using this contraption.

The final product.

We ate lunch here.
