Hari Raya

Muslims celebrate the festival of Aidilfitri at the end of Ramadan, the holy fasting momth. In Malaysia this is popularly known as Hari Raya Puasa, usually shortened Hari Raya (Day of Celebration). This year the Hari Raya holiday becan on Friday and extended through the long weekend. http://allmalaysia.info/msiaknow/festivals/rayapuasa.asp

Hari Rays is one of the most important holidays each year for the Malays. The holiday is celebrated with traditions that are reminiscent of some traditions associated with holidays back home. For example, the stores have been full of baskets containing goodies (remind me of Easter baskets)and the stores are filled with Raya cards. Hari Raya celbrations also reminds me of the US Thanksgiving. During the holiday Malays will return to their homes to visit family and to eat large amounts of food (the main difference I could see was that there was no football on TV during the Hari Raya celbration- what would Thanksgiving be without the annual Dallas Cowboy game?).

“Selamat Hari Raya” (Wishing you a joyous Hari Raya)
