Groundhog's Day

In the US, February 2nd is known as Groundhog's Day. A groundhog is a large member of the squirrel family (genus Marmota) that is found in parts of the eastern US. According to the legend, if it is sunny when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on Feb. 2nd then the groundhog will see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow. This means that winter will continue for six more weeks!

The most famous Groundhog's Day ceremony is help in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where the forecasting rodent is known as Punxsutawney Phil. (I think that they have Prairie Dog Pete in Lubbock).

I have heard all about the reports of cold weather from Lubbock, Texas, and the rest of the US. Thus, I guess that there will be great interest in whether or not the groundhog sees its shadow when he comes out in the US. Good luck!

I don't know whether they have any weather forecasting animals in Malaysia. As you can see from the photos taken out of my window at 9:30 this morning, any animal leaving its burrow in KL today would have seen its shadow. Thus, 6 more weeks of this horrible Malaysian winter (low = 73 degrees F, high = 90 degrees, humidity = 90%)!

I hope that everyone in the north stays warm and safe!
