Penang- "The Pearl of the Orient"

I spent New Years in Penang. Penang is a state located on the northern region of the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsula. Pulau Pinang (Penang Island)is an island that is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Georgetown, the main city on the island, has a rich history and was recently been regognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Penang is about a 4 hour drive away from KL.

A Little History.
Because of its location at the north of the Straits of Malacca, Penang has been an important port for trade between the East and the West. The British took over Penang in 1786 so there is a long British influence on the island. To learn more about the interesting history of Penang check out-

Because of the importance of Penang as a trade center, today there is much larger proportion of Chinese-Malaysians in Penang (> 50%) than in Malaysia as a whole.
