Wildlife Viewing- Early Morning Cruise

Because the forest is so thick, the best way to see wildlife near Sukau is from the river. We woke for our first trip at 5:30 AM and were on the water by 6:00.

Our group divided up into two boats.

"This is awfully early to be awake. I hope we see something"!

It didn't take to long for us to find a group of Proboscis Monkeys!

One of the main reasons that I wanted to visit Sukau was to see Proboscis Monkeys. It didn't take long!

Proboscis Monkeys are only found on Borneo. They are named for their unusually prominant noses (old timers may think of Jimmy Durante). Here is a photo from the internet to show you what they really look like.

After the monkeys we came upon four Storm Storks. Our guide told us that this was a highly endangered species with an estimated population size of only 200 individuals.

Continuing up the river. At some points I estimated that the river was almost 150 meters wide (just like the piece of the Brazos River that "flows" through Lubbock).

We left the main river and travelled up a side stream.

Another Proboscis Monkey (see the long tail?)

The small stream led into a large oxbow lake.

The white blob in the center of the photo is a hornbill flying past.

We got out of the boat for a hike through the forest. The first thing that we saw were some of Malaysia's world famous leeches. We were lucky that noone from our group picked up a leech during the short time that we were on shore.

Forest view.

This worm was almost one foot long!

Everyone was prepared with rubber boots and leech socks. The boots definitely came in handy as we slogged through the mud.

Cool millipede.

If you look carefully in the water you can see a freshwater eel. He stuck his head out of the water several times, but I was never fast enough to get that photo.

The vines in the forest are really cool.
